Worldwide, Mathematics is considered the best subject
that can enhance the creativity and critical thinking of students. Since 1985,
the students of USM Mathematical Sciences Society and their advisors have initiated
the Penang State Mathematics Quiz as one of its annual activities carried out
with the approval from the Penang Education Ministry and with full sponsorship
from USM. The objectives of the Mathematics Quiz are to cultivate secondary
school students' interest in Mathematics, besides nurturing and exposing
students to natural occurring daily mathematical problems (in accordance with
school syllabus). The search for these types of mathematical solutions requires
creativity and critical thinking, and will, in turn, produce a well-rounded and
solution-oriented students. In 2015, the Mathematics Quiz had 237 participants
from 40 schools and in 2016, it had 174 participants from 29 schools. You may

our event:
Starting from 2017, Mathematics Quiz has been given an
“Enterprise” status by USM. Under this status, Mathematics Quiz will be
required to independently establish its own future financial
sustainability. Nevertheless, the Mathematics Quiz committee wishes to
maintain the low rate of their event fee as before. Hence, for the first
time in history, the committee step out to search for sponsorships and
at the same time, hope to be able to open up the event to every
Malaysian secondary student who is willing to take up the challenges and
the exposure.
Generally, all participants of Mathematics Quiz will be divided into two
categories, the junior category, which will consist of participants
from form two and form three, and the senior category, which will
consist of participants from form four and form five. All students from
each category are required to register as a team of size three, with a
registration fee of RM50 per team.
